Why should I write inspirational poetry

How often, particularly in times of loneliness or sadness, have the words of a song just “hit the spot” as regards your situation?  And, of course, songs are but poems skilfully set to music.

Thus is the power of verse, and, in particular, of inspirational verse.

As Edward Bulwer-Lytton once so accurately said  “The pen is mightier than the sword”.

And a thought, idea or argument can so often be expressed much more powerfully through a few short verses of a poem or song than through a much lengthier spoken address or printed article.

Poetry serves to fulfil many purposes - in differing cases to entertain, educate, encourage, uplift, challenge or move the reader, in some cases bringing a smile to their faces, in others, evoking a tear.

So just how, you may ask, could my words really change lives?

Let me illustrate with a few examples.

You write a poetic tribute to your mother.  A reader identifies with the loving qualities highlighted as being manifestly evidenced in their own mother, realises how much she has been taken for granted, and, with renewed determination, seeks to reciprocate that love as never before.

Or you are privileged to have a very happy marriage.  In poetic form you outline the secrets of your success.  How welcome will be found such wise, tried and tested counsel to the newlyweds just embarking on their lifelong voyage of love.  And who knows what a difference such helpful words may impart to an ailing marriage.

Or you write emotively of the human tragedy brought about through marital infidelity, speed-related road accidents, drug abuse or suicide.  A reader impacted by your poetic message is halted in their tracks, and forced to consider where their choices may lead them.  Their very life and personal well-being may potentially be safeguarded as a result.

“I could never do that” you argue.  Well, as the saying goes, “You never know what you can do till you try!”  I would never have guessed or believed ten years ago that I would be doing this today.

Perseverance is the key!  For practice, even should it not make perfect, will yet enable you to make vast strides forward towards achieving the goal of proficient writing.

And writing poetry can not only prove wonderfully therapeutic for yourself, but its message may equally inspire and uplift others.  This is truly a win-win situation, which will amply compensate you for the time and effort invested in the pursuit of this most honourable craft.

A well-penned poem is just like a precious seed.  Once sown, it is impossible to gauge just how many hearts it may touch, and how many lives if may impact – for the better.

Is that not a compelling enough reason to begin writing right now!
