Where does the inspiration come from

Inspiration can simply be defined as a power which stimulates the mind, especially towards creative artistic activity.

It may come from many sources – it may be the chance saying of a little child, made in all innocency, but yet which may succinctly distil the essence of a great truth.

It may be a media image, either life-enhancing or heart rending, which may so stir the viewer’s emotions as to make them pour out their feelings.

Or it may be a lesson personally learned in the school of experience, which, when put down in the right words, may provide a healing balm to a needy soul in a similar situation.

Look at the world around you, the people, the places.  Our world is already filled with beauty, awe and wonder that most people are just too busy to see and to appreciate.

As a Christian, I look upon the Bible as my greatest source of inspiration.  Whatever my subject matter, its teachings and principles underpin and colour all of my writing.

There is no experience we may face, nor emotion we may feel, of which the Bible does not speak honestly and eloquently.

Surely then it is no surprise that the Bible, God’s blueprint for man’s highest and utmost good, both temporal and eternal, has always been and remains the world’s best selling book.

Careful reading, study and meditation of its truths will repay rich dividends.  And the wisdom contained within its covers is sufficient to generate a wealth of life-enhancing poems.

There are literally a wealth of potential sources of inspiration all around you.  The key for any dedicated poet is to cultivate an attitude of constant alertness, ever being on the look out for that initial spark.

Carry a pen and notebook with you at all times, that you may jot down thoughts and ideas which come to you, wherever you are – thoughts and ideas which may easily have been forgotten by the time you return home!

The eager and active mind can become the fertile soil from which, with the right nourishment, care and attention, a masterpiece may swiftly emanate from the simplest of seed thoughts.
