Spring is the season of renewal and rebirth,
As all nature awakens, replenishing the earth –
Daffodils, crocuses and sprays of blossom appear,
Farmers plant wheat and barley, as lengthening days endear;
And, in greening fields lambs play, as many sweet songs are sung
By the newly arrived birds, building nests for their young.

Then hot summer brings glorious long, sunny days,
The roses in full bloom, with bright colour ablaze;
Buzzing bees and butterflies vie for space in the air,
As, with T-shirts, shorts and swimwear, families prepare,
Both at home and abroad, to fulfil holiday dreams –
A mix of basking in the sun with cooling swims and ice creams.

Autumn turns the leaves russet, gold, yellow and brown,
Before being stripped from the trees to instead carpet the ground;
Hibernating animals prepare for long months of sleep,
Gathering winter store, in the ground to bury deep;
And their long journey south the migrant birds will begin,
As fruit-laden branches are emptied, and the harvest gathered in.

Winter brings short, chilly days, the nights long and dark,
The now bare branches of trees appearing lifeless and stark;
It blankets whole landscapes in purest white virgin snow,
To children’s exhilaration, their faces aglow;
And we don warm coats, gloves and scarves, to shield from icy blasts,
As birds search for crumbs and berries, to survive whilst winter lasts.

Each season has a beauty, texture and mood of its own,
With its own unique wardrobe, and melodious tone,
Yet all blending together inextricably
To show a rich kaleidoscope of divine tapestry;
And gazing with awe at Mother Nature’s ever changing display
We praise Almighty God for so ordering things this way.

A poem from the book “Touching Hearts

A friend of mine was recently asked by his eight-year old son “Daddy, how do you know there is a God?”  Pointing to the view across the countryside from their window towards a glorious sunset, he replied “Do you really think all this could ever just have happened by chance?”

God reveals Himself to us in many ways.  He speaks through the pages of scripture.  In the person of the Holy Spirit He comes to dwell within those who trust His Son as Saviour.  He draws strangely near at special times.  And He proves His reality through answered prayers.

But consider now the balance, precision, beauty and diversity of the world all around us.  Does this not clearly, tangibly and overwhelmingly point to the existence of a benevolent and all-wise Divine Architect?

This poem celebrates just one facet of our great Creator’s handiwork – the ever changing face of the passing seasons.  As you read these simple thoughts, do you need to stop, look afresh at nature’s beauty all around you, and to thank God anew for our wonderful world?
