A poem on the love of God may, to some people, seem a strange inclusion amidst a selection of love poems.  Yet, whilst in no way minimising the wonder, value and importance of human love, does this not surely pale into insignificance when compared with the love of God.

A love that thought of us when we had no thought of Him, even when we perhaps despised His very name.  A love which gave His very best, at unspeakable cost – His own dear Son, the Lord Jesus Christ, who would die on a cruel cross to reconcile guilty sinners to Himself.

Do you perhaps feel unlovely and unloved today? As you read these words of assurance to those resting in Christ for salvation, why not look in faith to the Lord Jesus this very hour?  You too may know the reality of this love – a love which far surpasses every other love.
Like as a father upon his children has compassion
So God cares for His people, but in a much greater fashion -
For their names are engraved upon the palms of His hands,

And, more in number than the grains in all the world's sands
Are His thoughts towards them who truly are His,
For the Father of mercies and God of all comfort He is -
Bottling every tear that His beloved cry
As they are to Him the apple of His eye;
The very hairs on their heads He numbers,
And their souls' Keeper neither sleeps nor slumbers;
And to all who make His Son their heart's choice
Over them with singing He will rejoice.

And God's love, like His care, is past comprehending -

Boundless, unfathomable and never ending;
But whilst no greater love in a man can be found

Than for his friends to willingly lay his life down,
Yet God commends His love as more worthy of praise,

For, whilst we were yet sinners, Christ died in our place -
Yes, though we loved Him not, yet our Father above

Loved each one of us with an everlasting love,
And with lovingkindness has drawn us to Him
Through faith in Christ, who bled and died for our sin;
For God so loved this world His only Son He gave

That whoe'er believes in Him He would eternally save.

So our Heavenly Father we now praise and laud
For making us the sons and daughters of God -

For loving us in this most wonderful way,
And for His gracious care and provision each day,
For the promised blessings from His bounteous store,

And then at His right hand, pleasures for evermore.
