A poem from the book “Touching Hearts

The Psalmist David wrote in Psalm 46:1 – “God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble.”  And, in other scripture passages, God has promised He will not leave us comfortless, and will never leave nor forsake us.

It is these precious promises that provide the inspiration for “In our deepest despair God truly is there.”  The poem aims to weave these and other wonderfully reassuring scriptural promises into a rich tapestry of comfort for those passing through such times of deep despair.

A beautiful story is told of a man who dreamed he saw two sets of footsteps in the sand, one belonging to him, and the other belonging to the Lord.  However, noticing there were only one set of footprints at the saddest and most difficult times of his life, he was deeply troubled.

However, on asking the Lord why He had forsaken him during these times, the answer, of course, came back.  God had not forsaken him – it was then that the Lord had carried him.
O Lord, the trial is hard, my strength seems almost but gone,
And I wonder just how much longer can I go on;
But no circumstance can the Christian from Your love sever,
For You have promised to leave nor forsake me never
Our refuge and strength, present to help amidst life's alarms,
As around and underneath are the everlasting arms;

Thus I draw nigh to you now to call upon Your name,
To plead your precious promises which I in faith claim.

So, as I pass through the waters, O Lord, stand by me,

And through the raging fire, O preserve me safely;
Make my experience the reality the Apostle Paul knew,
Who had this answer to prayer -
"My grace is sufficient for you.

So Lord bear me up, with Your help and strength endued,
For I know You work all things together for my good

As part of Your greater, heavenly design -
My faith to strengthen, purify and refine.

And Lord, You've told us not to be anxious about anything,

But all our petitions to the throne of grace bring;
For whate'er we ask, believing, we shall receive,

Finding mercy and grace to help in time of need.
So I gladly therefore cast all my care upon You,
Who can exceeding abundantly above all that I ask or think do,
And I thank You, Heavenly Father, for your loving care,
For in our deepest despair You truly are there.
